Honda Walks Away, Leaving Nissan in Search of a Partner
Nissan and Honda have called off their planned merger, ending talks that began in December. The collapse came swiftly, with Honda rejecting Nissan’s fate as a subsidiary. Nissan, struggling with declining sales, is now searching for another merger partner.
Frankly, this is good news. Nissan has been stagnant for years, churning out uninspiring products. A Honda-led Nissan could have diluted Honda’s engineering excellence. If Nissan wants to revive its brand, it needs more than just a financial lifeline.
One potential partner in the mix? Taiwanese electronics giant Foxconn. That would be a wild shift, but Nissan’s desperate enough to consider it. Still, the real underdog in this story is Mitsubishi. Once an innovator, it’s now just a badge under Nissan’s control.
Mitsubishi deserves better. Maybe Nissan’s struggles will push Mitsubishi to reclaim its glory. But if history repeats itself, we’re not holding our breath.
