2023 Formula 1 Brazilian GP Recap: King Alonso is Back!

By AutomotiveWoman, Automotive & Motorsport Content Creator

The 2023 Formula 1 Brazilian Grand Prix was nothing short of spectacular, with thrilling on-track action, surprising twists, and plenty of drama. Saturday kicked off with the final Sprint Race of the year, a format fans enjoy for its high-energy events. However, both drivers and Formula 1 stakeholders agreed that the Sprint Race format needs an overhaul to keep things exciting in 2024.  More to come on that later.

Formula 1 Brazilian Grand Prix: Verstappen Triumphs in Sprint, Pre-Race Drama Sets Stage

In the Sprint Race, Max Verstappen showcased his brilliance, securing the top spot for Red Bull Racing. Following him closely was McLaren’s Lando Norris, and the final podium position went to Sergio Perez, also representing Red Bull Racing. It was a taste of the intense competition that would unfold during the main event on Sunday.

The Brazilian Grand Prix lived up to its reputation as one of the most challenging races on the calendar. Scuderia Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc encountered mechanical issues, causing him to spin and collide with the wall even before the race officially started. This unexpected incident set the stage for a day full of surprises.

The race took a dramatic turn right from the beginning as a heavy shunt involving Haas F1 driver Kevin Magnussen and Williams F1 driver Alex Albon brought out the red flag. Thankfully, both drivers emerged unscathed, but the track was littered with debris and damaged race cars, necessitating a temporary halt to racing for safety crews to clear the wreckage.

The incident also caused significant damage to the wings of AlphaTauri’s Daniel Ricciardo and McLaren’s Oscar Piastri who were innocent bystanders. Their respective teams worked diligently during the red flag to repair their race cars, allowing them to rejoin the competition.

Verstappen Clinches Victory in Tire-Strategic Brazilian GP, Alonso Shines at 43

Tire strategy played a pivotal role in the F1 Brazilian Grand Prix, with only the red compound deemed suitable for the circuit and delivering the best performance. Max Verstappen ultimately pulled away for the win, though he faced stiff competition from Lando Norris, who fought early on but eventually conceded.

However, the most thrilling battle of the day unfolded between two seasoned veterans – world champion Fernando Alonso, driving for Aston Martin F1, and Red Bull’s Sergio Perez. The two titans battled fiercely for the third position, proving once again that age is just a number for Alonso, who at 43, remains a force to be reckoned with.

In the end, it was Verstappen who claimed the top spot, with Norris in second, and Alonso securing a hard-fought third place.

As we look forward to the next race, Formula 1 fans can mark their calendars for the Las Vegas Grand Prix in the USA, just two weeks away. The Brazilian Grand Prix may be over, but the excitement of Formula 1 continues to deliver unparalleled racing experiences.
