Your 2024 NASCAR Cup Series Daytona 500 Champion is Crowned
After a 24hrs rain reply and 500 miles, #24 William Byron, team Hendrick Motorsport and Chevrolet, is your 2024 NASCAR Cup Daytona 500 Champion. The win didn’t come without its drama.
As early as lap 6, fan favourite Jimmie Johnson who qualified for the 500 by the skin of his teeth, was caught up in a wreck. Outside pole winner, Michael McDowell suffered many issues, but was able to get in fixed. Unfortunately by the end of stage #1, he was 6 laps down. Chase Elliott went on to win Stage #1.
AJ Allmendinger who sustained a change-lane violation very early in the 500 was able to finish Stage #2 on the lead lap. And while it looked dicey towards the end of the Stage, all race cars were facing in the right direction. Ryan Blaney, defending 2023 NASCAR Cup Champion in a Ford went on to win.
Ford, Toyota and Chevy all looked good for a win as laps continued to wind down. But with 10 laps to go, it was two Fords and two Chevy’s, lead by Ross Chastain and followed closely by Daytona 500 pole sitter, Joey Logano in a Ford.
But a mere half-lap later, the majority of top runners were out, and in total 18 race cars!
NASCAR decided to throw a red flag with 8 laps to go, with Ross Chaatain remaining in the lead.
However after a crazy restart and another spin, #24 William Byron is the 2024 NASCAR Cup Daytona 500 Champion. Hendrick Motorsport take #1 and #1 in the Daytona 500, 40 years to the day of the teams first start.
See you next year!
