What’s the Difference: Hydrogen vs Electric Vehicles

What is the difference between hydrogen and electric vehicles?

Hydrogen vehicles and electric vehicles (EVs) are both alternatives to traditional gasoline-powered vehicles, but they differ in the way they generate and store energy.

Hydrogen vehicles are powered by a fuel cell that converts hydrogen into electricity. The fuel cell combines hydrogen with oxygen from the air to produce electricity, which is then used to power the vehicle’s electric motor. The only byproduct of this process is water, making hydrogen vehicles emissions-free.

On the other hand, electric vehicles are powered by batteries that store electricity, which is used to power an electric motor. The batteries can be charged using electricity from an external source, such as a wall outlet or a charging station. Electric vehicles are also emissions-free when charged using renewable energy sources.

Key Differences

One key difference between hydrogen vehicles and electric vehicles is their refueling/recharging process. Hydrogen vehicles refuel at specialized filling stations, which are currently limited in number. Meanwhile, electric vehicles can be charged at home or at public charging stations that are becoming more widely available.

Another difference is the range of the vehicles. Hydrogen vehicles typically have a longer range than electric vehicles, but they are still limited compared to gasoline-powered vehicles. Meanwhile, electric vehicles generally have a shorter range but are improving in range capabilities.

Final Thoughts

Overall, both hydrogen and electric vehicles offer low or zero-emission driving options, but the technology and infrastructure for each is currently at different stages of development.

AutomotiveWoman TIP!

If you don’t “have-to” purchase now, try leasing so you’re not suck in a long-term financing contract.  Waiting a bit longer to commit to a hydrogen or electric vehicle will allow infrastructure to be built.
