Superstar Racing Experience Faces Uncertain Future
In a surprising move, Superstar Racing Experience (SRX) has suspended its 2024 season, citing challenging market conditions. The series, launched in 2020, aimed to be an all-star showcase, featuring top drivers from various disciplines competing in evenly matched equipment to emphasize driver talent.
Despite early success with 1.3 million viewers per race on CBS in its inaugural season, SRX struggled to maintain momentum. Viewership dwindled to 436,000 on ESPN last year, prompting concerns. SRX, however, remained optimistic, unveiling a 2024 schedule. Just yesterday, social media updates indicated business as usual.
However, late last week SRX announced the postponement of its fourth season, attributing the decision to market factors that proved insurmountable. A source familiar with the matter revealed escalating costs as a key challenge. SRX is actively exploring strategic options for its long-term viability, with leadership committed to revival if a viable path emerges.
Founded by NASCAR Hall of Famers Ray Evernham and Tony Stewart, along with sports business experts Sandy Montag and George Pyne, SRX faced leadership shifts. Evernham, absent from public appearances since 2022, recently acquired the trademark for the International Race of Champions. Stewart, engaged in NHRA drag racing, balances multiple endeavors. Montag and Pyne, involved in various ventures, extend their commitments beyond SRX.
Don Hawk, SRX’s CEO, managed day-to-day operations for the founders. The decision also reflects the enduring softness of the motorsports sponsorship market. Despite attracting big names from IndyCar and NASCAR personalities over three seasons, SRX faced challenges sustaining interest.
Will SRX be resurrected in the future? Who knows, but here at AutomotiveWoman.com we’ll definitely miss the on and off track spectacle.
