What’s Next in F1 After The Summer Break and Beyond
Carlos Sainz’s recent announcement about his move to Williams F1 is a smart choice.
Ferrari’s decision not to extend his contract left many wondering about his next steps.
Initially, rumors suggested a switch to Audi’s new F1 project. However, this would have been a misstep. Audi F1, despite its potential, is still in its infancy and plagued by management issues. Joining Williams F1, a team with a clear vision and strong leadership, gives Sainz a better chance to shine.
On the other hand, Sergio Perez secured a contract extension with Red Bull Racing early this year but has struggled since. Perez’s race struggles have led Red Bull Racing to hold a meeting earlier this week to decide whether or not to keep Perez following the summer break.
We now know that Red Bull Racing has extended a lifeline to Perez but if things continue, we don’t envision him sticking around in 2025.
For now, Perez brings significant sponsorship money, which is crucial for Red Bull.
Additionally, with the 2024 Mexico GP approaching, not having Perez on the grid for his home race would be unwise. Despite this extension, it’s likely Perez will not stay with Red Bull beyond 2024. Red Bull’s reserve driver, Liam Lawson, has proven his talent.
He filled in admirably for Daniel Ricciardo at AlphaTauri F1 in 2023, showcasing his racing skills.
Looking ahead, Yuki Tsunoda will not move to Red Bull Racing’s main team. He is expected to finish his contract with VISA Cash APP RB (formerly AlphaTauri F1) before joining Aston Martin F1. This move will happen after Fernando Alonso retires post-2026, allowing Tsunoda to reunite with Honda Performance Power. Daniel Ricciardo, meanwhile, will complete his tenure with VISA Cash APP RB and retire at the end of the 2025 season.
In conclusion, Sainz’s choice to join Williams is a calculated and promising move.
Perez’s temporary extension at Red Bull is strategic but his long-term future is uncertain. The F1 landscape continues to evolve with new drivers stepping up and veterans stepping down. The next few seasons promise exciting changes and developments.
