Rivian R1T and R1S | What you Need to Know
Rivian, the all-electric US manufacturer and technology company which was launched in 2009, finally began delivering their first international vehicles in Canada at the end of 2022, and if you happen to be in the market for a $100,000 dollar plus EV truck or SUV, Rivian, is happy to sell you two different models.
R1T
The R1T, is Rivian’s EV truck model which will compete with Tesla’s Cyber Truck, if Musk decides to stop wasting money with Twitter, and actually build the thing, then there’s the Chevrolet Silverado EV and the Ford F150 Lighting.
If you prefer an SUV style vehicle, you can consider the R1S, but the competition in the SUV luxury segment is stiff. There’s the Audi e-Tron, BMW iX, Fisker Ocean, Jaguar I-PACE, Mercedes-Benz EQS, and the GMC Hummer EV which I’ve personally reviewed and was impressed by for its comfortable drive and technology, but not so much its price tag.
And speaking about pricing, the R1T pick-up will start at just shy of $101,000 dollars Canadian or $73,000 US and the R1S will begin at just shy of $108,000 dollars Canadian or $78,000 US.
Besides offering two different body styles, the available technology in both will primarily be the same, with great connectivity, comfort, over the air updates and driver assisted technology which will also be autonomous. So, how do you choose? Well it comes down to lifestyle, and how active you are.
For example, the R1T seats up to 5-passenger, can tow up-to 11,000lbs wade through 3ft of water, the rear bed offers anywhere from 4.5 feet to 7ft feet of space, and I know rear bed numbers aren’t very impressive when compared to domestic pick-up trucks, BUT, the Rivian offers under bed storage and a built-in air-compressor.
R1S
If you’re looking for a bit more luxury and added seating space for guests, then the R1S is for you. With seating for 7, an elevated interior, respectable towing capabilities at 7,700 lbs., and up-to 104 cu.ft. or just under 3000L of max passenger and cargo space, the R1S SUV is a very good choice compared to other competitors I mentioned previous.
