The treacherous conditions during SQ3 added to the drama, with drivers navigating the wet track on intermediate tires. Challenges abounded as Leclerc and Verstappen grappled with track limits, leading to lap time deletions. However, Norris’s pole position was briefly in jeopardy as his own lap time faced deletion before being reinstated, solidifying his place at the top of the grid.
As the session concluded, Hamilton settled for second place, with Alonso and Verstappen rounding off the top four. Sainz, Perez, and Leclerc completed the top positions, while Piastri, Bottas, and Zhou secured places in the top ten.
The rain-soaked session proved to be an equalizer, providing an opportunity for new faces to shine alongside established contenders. For Zhou Guanyu, securing a top-ten finish was particularly significant, earning the admiration of his home crowd.
The stage is now set for the Sprint race, scheduled to commence on Saturday morning (local time), promising further excitement and challenges for drivers navigating the Shanghai International Circuit.
