McLaren F1 takes Constructors lead from Red Bull
The motorsport world was treated to a thrilling weekend as two of its premier series delivered heart-stopping action. In Baku, Formula 1 saw a fierce battle for the win at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, while the streets of Nashville hosted the dramatic conclusion of the 2024 IndyCar season.
Formula 1: Piastri’s Pivotal Win in Baku
The Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix delivered the kind of race fans dream of. After a series of safety cars and late-race drama, it was McLaren’s Oscar Piastri who took the chequered flag, edging out Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who admitted after the race that he could have blocked better.
Piastri’s triumph was a crucial victory for McLaren, propelling the team to the top of the Constructors’ Championship standings, leapfrogging the previously dominant Red Bull Racing. The win solidifies McLaren’s resurgence this season, as they now hold a narrow lead over Red Bull, with just a handful of races remaining.
Despite Red Bull’s struggles, Verstappen remains a title contender, but McLaren’s newfound momentum will undoubtedly add pressure.
The penultimate lap crash between Red Bull Racing driver Sergio Perez and Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz has been deemed a racing incident by the stewards post-race.
Other notable race mentions include:
- Future full-time Haas F1 driver Oliver Bearman successfully collected points for the struggling America Team in his race debut after full-time driver KMag received a race ban
- New Williams F1 driver, Franco Colapinto who replaced Logan Sargeant has already scored points for the team on only his second outing

IndyCar: Palou Clinches Championship in Wild Nashville Finale
Meanwhile, in the streets of Nashville, the 2024 IndyCar season reached its thrilling conclusion with Alex Palou securing the series championship after an intense battle in the Music City Grand Prix.
It was a chaotic race, with early trouble for Will Power, who had entered the race as Palou’s closest rival for the title. Power’s mechanical issues allowed Palou to cruise to a comfortable points finish, securing his second IndyCar title. But the race win was far from straightforward.
Colton Herta battled it out with Pato O’Ward in the closing stages, exchanging blows in a dramatic duel. Herta, driving for Andretti Autosport, eventually bested O’Ward to take the checkered flag, marking his first win of the season. The victory ended a roller-coaster campaign for Herta, while O’Ward’s aggressive driving kept fans on edge until the very last corner.
Palou’s consistency throughout the season made him the deserving champion, while Nashville’s unpredictable race served as a fitting climax to a highly competitive IndyCar season.
As both series move forward, the spotlight will remain firmly on McLaren, whose success across both Formula 1 and IndyCar underscores their resurgence as motorsport powerhouses.
