INDYCAR Returns to Canada on August 14-16, 2026
The Ontario Honda Dealers Indy will have a brand-new home starting in 2026. Under a multi-year agreement, INDYCAR announced the move to the City of Markham. The NTT INDYCAR SERIES will race on a new downtown street circuit on August 14-16, 2026.
Markham Becomes Ontario’s Motorsport Hub
Markham is adjacent to Toronto and is the fastest-growing city in York Region, already home to 1.25 million residents. The race will be staged in Markham Centre, the city’s vibrant core filled with corporate headquarters, York University’s Markham campus, and the Pan Am Centre. Mayor Frank Scarpitti expressed pride in hosting. “We are excited to welcome INDYCAR to our streets. Markham is ready to build on its strong sports legacy,” he said.
A Major Tourism and Economic Boost
The new Markham race is projected to attract over 140,000 fans during the three-day event. Organizers expect tens of millions in economic impact from tourism, hospitality, and entertainment. Fans will benefit from easy access via Highways 404 and 407, Unionville GO Station, and the VIVA Transit system. Ontario’s Minister of Sport Neil Lumsden called the Indy a cornerstone event. “Sport tourism is a major driver for Ontario, and this event will continue boosting our economy,” he said.
A Challenging New Circuit Design
The temporary 3.52-kilometre track will run through Markham Centre’s eastern precinct. It includes 12 turns, thrilling straights, and a double-sided pit lane. Track designer Tony Cotman of NZR Consulting led the design, ensuring technical challenges for drivers and excitement for fans.
Building on a Proud Legacy
The Ontario Honda Dealers Indy has been part of Canada’s motorsport culture since 1986. Jeff Atkinson, event president, praised the new direction. “This move to Markham builds on our event’s great legacy and creates a new chapter for fans,” he said.
The NTT INDYCAR SERIES remains North America’s premier open-wheel racing competition. Its stars race at speeds exceeding 370 kph on ovals, road courses, and street circuits. The series also features the legendary Indianapolis 500, motorsport’s biggest race.
Penske Entertainment CEO Mark Miles called the move vital. “It is crucial for INDYCAR to reach Canadian fans, and Markham will showcase our thrilling racing,” he said.
Community Ties and Fan Engagement
Ontario Honda Dealers will continue their title sponsorship, including the popular Free Fan Friday. Fans can attend free with a donation to Make-A-Wish Canada. Since 2010, this tradition has raised over $1 million.
Markham native and former INDYCAR driver James Hinchcliffe welcomed the news. “It’s extra special knowing INDYCAR will be in my hometown,” said Hinchcliffe, now a FOX Sports commentator.
Looking Ahead
The Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham promises to be York Region’s largest sports and cultural festival. Fans can expect food trucks, interactive displays, and charity partnerships alongside world-class racing.
