Mick Schumacher Joins INDYCAR for 2026

A New Era with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing

A fresh chapter for a talented young driver—and a major win for INDYCAR

Mick Schumacher is officially joining the NTT INDYCAR SERIES in 2026 with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing (RLL), marking one of the most exciting driver moves in recent memory. At AutomotiveWoman.com, we’ve been watching his career unfold since his first laps in Formula One. I’ve had the privilege of meeting Mick several times in the F1 paddock during his Haas F1 days, and he is every bit as kind, grounded and curious as fans imagine. Watching his journey progress into INDYCAR feels both natural and long overdue.

RLL confirmed the 26-year-old will campaign the full 2026 INDYCAR season in the No. 47 Honda. For Schumacher, the number is symbolic—a nod to his family legacy, led by his father, seven-time Formula One World Champion Michael Schumacher.

And while the younger Schumacher already brings 43 Formula One starts and multiple WEC podiums, his leap into INDYCAR signals something bigger: a chance to embrace pure, American-style racing while writing his own chapter—far away from the constant comparisons and politics that often shadow F1 careers.

A New Challenge: Ovals, Speedways, and the Indy 500

Schumacher is no stranger to high-speed open-wheel racing, but INDYCAR represents new territory. Six of the 17 races in 2026 will run on ovals or superspeedways, including the legendary 110th Running of the Indianapolis 500.

The European-trained racer tested on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course in October. According to the team, he delivered pace, strong feedback, and impressive adaptability—enough to convince RLL to push hard to sign him.

Team co-owner Bobby Rahal didn’t mince words: “His test with us on the IMS road course was exceptional… Everyone walked away from that event determined to do what we could to bring Mick into our program.”

From our perspective, this is the kind of cross-series talent exchange INDYCAR thrives on. Drivers like Alex Palou, Romain Grosjean, and Marcus Ericsson have already shown how European training blends beautifully with INDYCAR’s “no politics, all racing” culture. Mick fits that mold perfectly.

Why the Move Makes Sense—for Mick and INDYCAR

Schumacher’s racing style has always leaned toward precision, discipline, and long-run consistency—traits honed in Formula 2 and perfected in endurance racing. But his biggest strength is his attitude. He works hard, listens harder, and never stops evolving.

And, as he noted, the appeal of INDYCAR was immediate: “I was… excited about the car and the American way of motorsport which comes across as being more about pure and direct racing.”

At AutomotiveWoman.com, we share that sentiment. INDYCAR offers one of the most authentic competitive platforms in global motorsport. It’s raw. It’s balanced. It rewards racecraft over budgets. Mick choosing this path says a lot about the series—and even more about his courage and intent.

The RLL Lineup Looks Stronger Than Ever

Schumacher joins Graham Rahal and 2025 Rookie of the Year Louis Foster in what could be RLL’s most balanced and competitive lineup in years. David Letterman couldn’t hide his excitement: “With Graham Rahal, Louis Foster and now Mick, the future… is limitless. I’m very excited for the 2026 season.”

From a lifestyle perspective, RLL represents a uniquely American mix of heritage, humor, and ambition. Mick—quiet, thoughtful, and detail-driven—adds an intriguing dynamic to the trio.

A Career Built With Patience, Growth and Grit

Schumacher’s path hasn’t been easy, though it’s certainly been accomplished.

Highlights include:

  • 2020 FIA Formula 2 Champion
  • 43 Formula One starts with Haas
  • Reserve driver for Ferrari, Mercedes, McLaren and Williams
  • 2024–2025 WEC competitor for Alpine
  • Multiple WEC podiums, including Imola and Spa-Francorchamps

He has rebuilt, adapted, and redefined himself at each step—a sign of a driver far from finished.

A Partnership Worth Watching

From where we sit, this move feels less like a gamble and more like smart timing. INDYCAR gains a globally recognized talent with authentic racing roots. Mick Schumacher gains a competitive, open-wheel series that values driver skill and gives racers the space to reinvent themselves.

And personally? It’s exciting to cheer for someone who truly loves the craft. Mick is gracious, humble, and laser-focused. Seeing him step into the No. 47 Honda in 2026 with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing feels like the start of something special.

We’ll be watching closely—and cheering loudly.

The 2026 NTT INDYCAR SERIES kicks off on March 1 at the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, with new stops including Arlington, Texas and Markham, Ontario, Canada. The future looks bright for both Mick and the series.
