It Took a Woman to Call Out FIA’s Broken Democracy

Laura Villars Has Beauty & Balls Larger Than Any Man!

Sometimes, change doesn’t come from the expected voices. In global motorsport, it took a woman with guts to shine a light on a system quietly designed to protect the incumbent. Laura Villars, a Swiss-French racing driver, and entrepreneur, is taking the FIA to court over its undemocratic presidential election — and I can’t help but ask: why did it take her?

No Male Candidate Stepped Up

Four candidates announced their intentions for the FIA presidency. Yet only the incumbent, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, will actually appear on the ballot on December 12. Why? Because the rules require candidates to assemble a slate of vice-presidents from each of the FIA’s six regions.

Here’s the kicker: in South America, only Fabiana Ecclestone (Bernie Ecclestone’s wife) is eligible — and she’s already on Ben Sulayem’s ticket. That simple rule effectively blocks anyone else from running.

Former FIA steward Tim Mayer withdrew weeks ago, slamming the “illusion of democracy.” Yet no other male candidate challenged the system. None dared to push for fairness. None spoke up. Until Laura Villars.

Why Her Fight Matters

Villars isn’t just challenging rules; she’s challenging a culture of silence. She’s asking questions that should have been asked long ago: Why accept a system that shuts out competition? Why pretend democracy exists when it clearly doesn’t?

She filed a référé in the Paris court to postpone the December election until the matter is settled. In her own words: “I am not acting against the FIA. I am acting to protect it. Democracy is not a threat to the FIA; it is its strength.”

She’s calm, open, and determined — a striking contrast to the quiet acceptance of male candidates who had the chance but chose not to act.

A Step Toward Transparency

The FIA Forward campaign has praised her efforts as a “positive step toward democracy and transparency.” This isn’t just about one election; it’s about holding institutions accountable and proving that leadership should be earned — not protected by loopholes.

The court hearing on November 10 may not only decide the fate of this election but also set a precedent for how motorsport organizations operate globally.

Why This Is Bigger Than Motorsport

Legitimacy isn’t about the winner. It’s about fairness and the opportunity for others to compete. Laura Villars is doing what no one else dared — showing that sometimes, it takes a woman with courage to make people notice a broken system.

And honestly? That’s exactly the wake-up call motorsport needs.
