“FERRARI”: A HIGH-OCTANE JOURNEY THROUGH ENZO FERRARI’S LEGACY AND RACING GOLDEN ERA
In a riveting blend of speed, drama, and real-life tragedy, Michael Mann’s long-awaited biopic, “Ferrari,” is set to take audiences on a thrilling ride. With its roots stretching back to Mann’s days as a 24-year-old film student, this passion project, simmering since 2000, finally hits theatres on Christmas Day 2023, following its acclaimed world premiere at the 80th Venice Film Festival.
The film navigates through the complex existence of Enzo Ferrari, portrayed with depth by Adam Driver. It offers a poignant look at Ferrari’s personal life: from his strained marriage with Laura (Penélope Cruz), his affair with Lina Lardi (Shailene Woodley), to his financial struggles, and moral dilemmas faced in the wake of the Mille Miglia tragedy. It also highlights the intense relationship between Ferrari and his drivers, whose passion for racing pushes them to the brink.
Set against the backdrop of the illustrious, but dangerous Mille Miglia of 1957, the film explores Ferrari’s involvement in this iconic 1,000-mile endurance challenge. Tragically, the race marked its final run due to a catastrophic accident implicating a Ferrari car, leading to the death of five children and the driver, Alfonso de Portago. This pivotal event serves as a critical focus of the film, depicting the consequential turmoil and legal battles that engulfed Ferrari.
Based on Brock Yates’ 1991 book Enzo Ferrari — The Man, The Cars, The Races, The Machine, the story not only celebrates Ferrari’s automotive achievements but also uncovers the raw, often brutal reality of motor racing in the 1950s. More than a biopic, “Ferrari” is an intimate portrait of a man whose passion for racing drove him to the pinnacle of success and the depths of despair, through his relentless pursuit of perfection.
Mann delivers more than a racing movie. It’s a cinematic journey into the heart of an automotive titan, whose name still resonates with speed and beauty. He delves into the soul of a bygone era when car racing was as perilous as it was glamorous.
