F1 United States GP Heads to Austin Without Ricciardo

City Honors Await as Storylines Heat Up

The United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, has always been a fan-favorite event since joining the Formula 1 calendar over a decade ago. Yet, this year, the race takes on a different tone with Daniel Ricciardo’s absence. The ever-charismatic Australian, known for his Texas-sized grin and love of cowboy culture, will miss the race for the first time since its inception, following his abrupt exit from Visa Cash APP Red Bull Racing.

Adding to the drama, Ricciardo was set to receive the keys to the city of Austin, a symbolic honor that will now be missed.

But while the grid misses one of its most colorful personalities, there’s no shortage of compelling storylines as we head into the weekend.

Circuit of the Americas Receives Changes

The organizers of the United States Grand Prix have implemented changes to the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) to minimize track limits violations. With the track being resurfaced this year, it provided a chance to address issues from last year’s race, where drivers frequently exceeded the white lines marking the circuit’s boundaries. To combat this, the asphalt verges at several sections—specifically at Turns 6, 13, 14, and 15—have been reduced by 1.5 meters and replaced with turf, deterring drivers from running completely off the track.

Additionally, to aid in monitoring track limits, cameras have been installed at key points around the circuit, providing better oversight of any vehicles that may stray beyond the track.

No American on The Grid & Lawson Returns

America’s own Logan Sargeant was dropped and replaced by Franco Colapinto two races ago and continues to prove he deserves a seat somewhere in F1.  Liam Lawson returns to the grid, having replaced the departed Danny Ricciardo from Visa Cash APP RB Racing. It will be interesting to watch the match-up again with Yuki and Lawson.

The McLaren Surge

McLaren’s resurgence in the latter half of 2024 has been one of the season’s most exciting developments. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have been pushing the boundaries and continue to challenge Red Bull Racing for the Drivers & Manufacturers Championship. With their momentum surging, Austin could be another podium opportunity for the papaya-clad duo.

Ferrari’s Tactical Gamble

Ferrari has endured yet another rollercoaster season, full of flashes of brilliance marred by strategic missteps. With upgrades planned for this weekend, the team hopes to close out the last few races of the season on a high note. But can they outthink the likes of Red Bull and Mercedes on one of the most technical circuits of the year?  Probably not, we’re guessing.

The United States Grand Prix promises plenty of action, even without Ricciardo. As F1’s growing American fanbase descends upon Austin, the stage is set for a thrilling weekend at the Circuit of the Americas.
