A New Era of Racing Sparks in Chicago
ABB NASCAR EV Prototype: The Future Just Got Louder—Silently
I didn’t feel it like I would a V8 roaring across the pavement, but I heard it!
That low hum. That sharp whirr. That flash of torque that sends goosebumps down your arms—not because of noise, but because of potential. My first up-close look at the ABB NASCAR EV Prototype took place at the 2025 NASCAR Chicago Street Race, thanks to an exclusive invite from ABB North America.
This wasn’t just a prototype race car. It was a statement that began a year ago and has continued to build momentum.

Who is ABB—and Why Should NASCAR Fans Care?
ABB is a global leader in electrification and automation, with more than 140 years of innovation behind them. From massive industrial plants to your EV home charger, ABB is already powering modern life—and now, they’re helping NASCAR power its future.
Their partnership with NASCAR, dubbed the ABB NASCAR Electrification Innovation Partnership, aims to explore high-performance electric racing. But it’s more than just fast laps. It’s about building infrastructure, advancing energy education, and creating a path to net-zero carbon emissions by 2035.
ABB is also a founding partner of NASCAR IMPACT, a platform designed to drive sustainability efforts both on and off the track. That includes everything from electrified haulers to energy-efficient racing facilities.
The Prototype That Changed My Perspective
Getting close to the NASCAR EV Prototype was like standing beside a spaceship that was built to turn left and right. This thing is no PR stunt. It’s a full-blown race car, with instant torque, next-gen battery cooling, and aerodynamic tricks up its steel-enforced flax fibre composite sleeve.
There’s no denying it—it looks aggressive. The front end and rear scream “race me.” But the absence of engine growl is replaced by something even more powerful: acceleration that’s immediate, electrifying, and clean.

The Bigger Picture
ABB’s involvement isn’t limited to the racetrack. Their innovations extend to long-haul fleet electrification, trackside power grids, and data-driven energy optimization across NASCAR’s operations.
This partnership represents a major step toward making motorsport part of the sustainability conversation—instead of outside of it.
My Take: A Quiet Revolution With Roaring Potential
I’ll be honest—I love the rumble of a V8. But the future isn’t trying to replace the soul of NASCAR. It’s trying to expand it. After seeing the ABB NASCAR EV car in action, it’s clear the sport isn’t just preparing for change. It’s leading it.
And I’m here for it. But first, NASCAR needs to introduce hybrid technology. Who knows… Maybe ABB will help with NASCARs next engine homologation.
FAST FACT: ABB employs over 105,000 people globally and has committed to enabling a resource-efficient and low-carbon world through electrification.
