2026 Toyota RAV4 First Look Review: 100% Electrified!

Efficient, Adventurous, and Surprisingly Refined

When I first got behind the wheel of the all-new 2026 Toyota RAV4 XSE Hybrid, I immediately noticed how much more polished this sixth-generation model feels. Toyota has completely redesigned the RAV4—now fully electrified—offering both Hybrid (HEV) and Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) versions. This move not only modernizes the brand’s best-seller but also makes it one of the most efficient and versatile SUVs in its class.

First Impressions: Sporty Meets Adventure-Ready

Visually, the RAV4 looks more confident than ever. The new Woodland trim and GR Sport edition each bring something distinct to the lineup—the Woodland looks adventure-ready with its rugged stance and raised roof rails, while the GR Sport’s sporty design gives it a more urban performance edge. Personally, I think Toyota nailed the styling balance here; it’s bold without being overdone.

Behind the Wheel: Smooth, Strong, and Efficient

Driving the XSE Hybrid trim was exactly what I expected from Toyota’s fifth-generation hybrid system—smooth, composed, and predictable. Acceleration feels stronger this year, thanks to up to 236 horsepower, making highway merging easier and more confident.

In terms of comfort, the RAV4 continues to impress. The ride is refined with minimal body roll and excellent cabin quietness, even at highway speeds. I did, however, notice a bit of a blind spot near the “C” pillar, something drivers should keep in mind when changing lanes.

My real-world fuel economy averaged 5.9L/100km (40 MPG), which is impressive considering my mix of urban driving, stop-and-go traffic, and highway cruising over a 2-hour period.  That’s right in line with Toyota’s efficiency promise and shows how far hybrid tech has come. Also, FYI, I consistently drove upwards of 15km/h or 9.3 MPH over the posted speed limit. Excluding school zones of course!

Tech and Comfort: The Right Mix of Digital and Physical

Inside, Toyota’s new Arene software platform powers a slick 12.9-inch touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital cluster, both of which give the cabin a high-tech, modern vibe. But I’ll admit—my personal preference still leans toward hard buttons for climate and key functions. They react faster and are simply easier to use while driving.

Connectivity is top-notch with 5G capability, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and dual Bluetooth support. Plus, the available hands-free power lift-gate and fold-flat rear seats make loading up gear for weekend getaways effortless.

Safety and Everyday Confidence

Every 2026 RAV4 now includes Toyota Safety Sense 4.0, which adds smarter pedestrian and cyclist detection, Radar Cruise Control, and Proactive Driving Assist. I especially appreciated the new 3D Panoramic View Monitor when navigating tight parking spots—it’s one of those features you quickly learn to rely on.

Built for Every Lifestyle

Whether you’re heading to the cottage, commuting downtown, or tackling light trails, the RAV4 feels like it was designed for all of it. The Woodland Edition, in particular, with 8.5 inches of ground clearance and all-terrain tires, is ideal for anyone who spends weekends outdoors.

Meanwhile, those looking for maximum power and range will likely gravitate toward the Plug-in Hybrid (324 hp), which can travel up to 84 km or 52 miles on pure electric power.

Pricing

As for pricing, Toyota hasn’t released final pricing yet for all trims.  However, they have suggested that you can expect pricing to begin around the low US$30,000 range for the Hybrid FWD model.

Final Thoughts

After spending time with the new RAV4, it’s easy to see why it remains a top-selling SUV. Toyota has blended efficiency, technology, and lifestyle appeal into a single package that feels both familiar and fresh.

For me, the 2026 RAV4 Hybrid XSE strikes a great balance—refined yet practical, powerful yet efficient, and ready for whatever the week (or weekend) brings.
