Winner Earns Historic Payday
The 2026 Indianapolis 500 delivered another historic milestone for the NTT INDYCAR SERIES. This time, the headlines centred around money.
Indianapolis Motor Speedway confirmed the total purse for the 110th running of the Indianapolis 500 reached a record-breaking $30,906,400. The figure represents the fifth straight year the event has shattered its own payout record.
Felix Rosenqvist Earns Historic $4.34M Payday
First-time Indy 500 winner Felix Rosenqvist walked away with a staggering $4.34 million payday after his dramatic victory for Meyer Shank Racing w/Curb Agajanian.
That payout now stands as the largest winner’s prize in Indianapolis 500 history.
The overall purse jumped more than 50 percent compared to 2025. Last season’s total payout sat at $20.28 million. The average driver payout also climbed sharply. Drivers earned an average of $936,500 this year, compared to $596,500 one year ago.
Those numbers underline the continued commercial growth of the Indianapolis 500.
They also reinforce the event’s position as North America’s richest single-day motorsport race.
Dramatic Finish
According to INDYCAR and Indianapolis Motor Speedway President J. Douglas Boles, attendance and competition all fuelled the event’s momentum. The 2026 race featured back-to-back grandstand sellouts for the Month of May. IMS officials also confirmed the race produced the most lead changes in Indianapolis 500 history.
Rosenqvist’s victory added even more drama. His finish marked the closest result in Indy 500 history.
Meanwhile, Mick Schumacher earned Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year honours for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. Schumacher collected a $50,000 bonus as part of his total payout of $218,800.
The rapid purse growth over recent years remains remarkable. In 2022, the Indy 500 purse stood at $16 million. Before that, the previous high came in 2008 at $14.4 million.
Now, the event has nearly doubled that mark in just four years.
From a business standpoint, the Indianapolis 500 continues evolving into a financial powerhouse. Massive attendance, stronger broadcast exposure, and increased sponsorship investment are driving the race to unprecedented levels.
Next up for the NTT INDYCAR SERIES is the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix on the streets of downtown Detroit on May 31.
